It seems that while the idea of the second part of the reading focuses on the coming together all of types of minorities, but it also highlights as Ben and Olivia both representing different types of people and cultures. The idea of pairs also seems prominent in this portion of the reading. At the wedding both cultures were represented equally in music, food, and decoration. There are a lot of allusions to the binding of two cultures and cultured people as a whole in this portion which may attribute to the current forming of different cultures to fight against discrimination.
I also liked the history of the Filipinos and Chinese given in this section especially Macarios story of the Mao mountain. In comparing the two cakes which represent the two of them separately but combine them together. The story of the old man that explains that he wants the mountains to be dug away behind his house as they "obstruct his view". The obstruction mentioned may be an obstruction to his way of life in all reality as it ends up representing Chinese fighting feudalism and imperialism. The man digs away at his mountains and a billion Chinese join in on the fight. Soon after Macario discusses this story, the guests begin to "dig" at the cake mountains. I think that cakes represent not only these mountains but Ben and Olivia in the fight of the revolution for justness.
Other connections from the wedding and the revolution was the date, which was the same day that Ferdinand Marcos signed his proclamation extending his two year term, allowing him to stay in office. This is represented to show that the joining of the forces are still up against a battle that will not be easily won. The wedding may have seemed like a happy ending, but it is really just the beginning of a lot of challenges.
